- To the Public, April 25, 1993
-
- I am distributing "Daymare 1" as Shareware. This game also appeared on the
- Atari ST as "Daymare". The 2 player version for the Atari ST was known as
- "Mystic Mirror".
-
- If you can afford it, I strongly hope that you will register your game with
- me. For $10 you will receive the latest version of the program, a bonus
- program, and you will be on my mailing list for all future products and
- newsletters. Your support helps me to continue writing and improving
- my games. Anyone who paid the original $16 price will receive a copy of
- the next "Daymare" when it is available.
-
- I am currently working on "Daymare 3". This game is being designed from
- scratch to work on the IBM as a one player game. I will be using VGA
- graphics for a 320 by 200 pixel screen in 256 colors. I am using flight
- simulator type graphics for a more realistic dungeon like that in Ultima
- Underworld(TM). It will also incorporate sound and scanned art.
-
- MAKE A BACKUP OF THIS DISK FOR YOUR ARCHIVES.
-
- OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
- A PC with at least a 286 processor is recommended to run "Daymare I".
- A Microsoft compatible mouse is required. Note that the GENIUS mouse is
- NOT Microsoft compatible.
- Files included are DAYMARE1.EXE,RQFRAMES.DAT,RQICONS.DAT,RQMAPS.DAT.
- To start a game type DAYMARE1.EXE, hit <ENTER> and follow the screen
- instructions.
- To quit a game in progress press <escape> and the game will exit
- immediately. You should save your game if you want it before
- you exit as a save is not made during exiting.
- To save a game click on the disk icon with your mouse. The game
- will be saved as "PLAYER.SAV".
- To attack a creature, click on the sword Icon. A slash mark will
- appear on the screen when you attack. The weapon in your right hand
- is the weapon used to attack with. If you do not have a weapon in that
- hand then bare-handed combat is used.
- To use the special magic of an item (if any) then select on the
- white diamond. Note some items are one-shot. There are no multi-use
- items, although some items are infinite use.
- To cast a spell, you must select some spell symbols, then click
- on the white diamond. If you select to the left or right of the diamond
- then you can erase all the selected symbols. Note that you cannot use
- the special power of items while a spell is currently ready to be cast.
- A miscast spell drains all your stamina. So does a spell that is to
- difficult for you to cast. If you see the spell in a book and you can't
- seem to cast it, then try again when you gain a level.
- There are four different kinds of armor. They are in the order that
- they appear: Physical, Fire, Electrical, and Poison. Note that clothing
- will give certain protection in each of the categories. Poison includes
- death spells and chemical attacks such as venomous clouds. If you are
- hit for damage, then an "X" will appear in each corner. A gold "X" is
- a magical attack. Physical armor protects against this randomly. A luck
- spell will cut all damage (after armor) in half. A bless spell causes
- a successful attack to only do one point of damage (ending the spell).
- Note that some things have weight. The higher your weight in stuff
- being carried, the slower your stamina is restored. Stamina is used up
- when casting spells or attacking. If your stamina is to low then you
- will be unable to attack or cast spells or use some items.
- The strike row will be occasionally be followed by a number. This
- number is the total damage done to critters at that instant. This helps
- you to determine if an attack form is having any effect.
- Strength has effect on damage done with weapon attacks. It also
- allows faster stamina recovery when you are weighted down.
- Agility has effect on attack rates and your chance to be hit by
- a monster. Shoes with good floor grip are useful here.
- Reason has a multiplier effect on how well a spell works. Also
- it allows you to cast high level spells at a lower level. Note that
- some spells may not be cast till sufficient level is reached.
- Vigor has a direct effect on your maximum health. Your maximum
- health is equal to Vigor times your Level divided by two.
- In the upper right you will see 4 vertical bars. These are
- your status bars. In all cases the higher the bars the better off
- you are. Starting from the left bar here is what they mean.
- The green bar is your current health. If this bar drops below
- zero then you will die. The red bar is your short term stamina
- level and affects your ability to complete actions. If this bar
- drops to low you will be unable to cast spells, do melee attacks,
- and perform many other actions. This bar drops whenever you attack
- or perform many other actions. The brown bar is your food level
- and affects how fast you recover health. The last or blue bar is
- your water level and affects stamina recovery. Casting spells and
- using magic items can also cause dehydration.
- To open a door, click on it with the mouse. If there is a small
- half circle at the top of the door, then the door is locked. To unlock
- the door, hold the proper key in mouse pointer and click on the door
- with it. The iron key unlocks any wood door.
- In a land far away a powerful wizard enchanted his life force
- into a golden skull and proclaimed himself to be a god. Then in a
- display of his malevolence he conquered the citadel inside of the
- mystic mirror. You play the part of adventurer who has vowed to
- defeat his evil plans and prevent the destruction of your world.
-
- HELPFUL HINTS:
- 1) Get a character with good vigor. Health points are great for
- staying alive.
-
- 2) Learn what to do with your treasure. Its not just there for
- decoration.
-
- 3) Watch your food and water. This affects your recovery of
- health and stamina. You should carry extra water.
-
- 4) You will need to find keys to open certain doors. There are
- four different keys you will probably need. If you accidently destroy
- your keys, there is more than one way to open or get past most doors.
-
- 5) Learn the monsters weak spots. Many monsters are immune to
- certain attack forms. It is quite futile to try to kill the walking
- dead with a death spell.
-
- 6) Many ordinary looking items actually have special powers.
-
- 7) Some levels regenerate monsters. You can never clean them up.
-
- 8) The goal of the game is to kill the floating gold skull on the
- top level. There are 10 levels in the game.
-
- 9) Don't miss the bag of holding early in game. This will save many
- trips. Also objects in the bag of holding have no weight.
-
- 10) All the wells are slightly magical. You can slowly heal yourself
- by drinking water from them.
